<p>Das junge sizilianische Mädchen Cabiria und ihre Krankenschwester Croessa  überleben einen verheerenden Vulkanausbruch und werden von den Phöniziern nach Karthago gebracht. Während der zweite punische Krieg zwischen Karthago und Rom tobt, wird das Paar in die Sklaverei verkauft, und Cabiria ist als Opfergabe an den Gott Moloch und die kindfressende Statue Kronos gedacht. Croessa überredet Roman Fulvius Axilla, Cabiria zu retten, doch danach bleibt das Mädchen für ein weiteres Jahrzehnt in Sklaverei.</p>
